35 FRSC officials killed on duty

Minna—No fewer than 35 regular marshals have been killed by motorists on highways across the country in the past one year while on official duties, with seven of them from Niger State.

Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Susan Ajenge, who disclosed this on the floor of the Niger State House of Assembly, said the development occurred when the staff were trying to enforce simple safety regulations.

According to her, another staff recently knocked down by a driver while trying to clear obstruction on the highway, was lying critically in a hospital and had gone through two operations and might lose his manhood.

The state legislatures had summoned the Commander to defend the series of criticism by the public against FRSC over allegations of officials intimidating and harassing motorists in its desperate move to generate revenue for government.

However, Ajenge defended the commission, lamenting that rather than obey simple traffic rules, motorists would turn around to criticise and attack FRSC officials.

Governor Okorocha speak on potential Igbo presidency in 2019

Ndigbo should stop thinking and talking about Igbo presidency in 2019.”– Governor Rochas Okorocha has accused previous Igboleaders of inaction and advised people to look for candidates with passion, vision and missionRochas Okorocha, the governor of Imo state, has delivered a fiery speech on the presidential election in 2019 and potential Igbo presidency at a post election press briefing in Owerri, on Friday, July 29.Okorocha said: “Ndigbo should stop thinking and talking about Igbo presidency in 2019. They should rather be thinking of someone that has something positive to offer to the people.

We need a president with passion, vision and mission and not mere sentiment. Igbos have had people that held choice public offices in the past. They ended up not doing any tangible thing for the people. So, the issue cannot be based on mere sentiment.”The governor has also congradulated the locals for electing all the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the last re-run polls. He also added:“What the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) took from us in Chief Ike Ekweremadu will be redressed soonest.”Besides, he stressed the neccessity of replacement of the incumbent Deputy Senate President of the National Assembly.“For the National Assembly to continue to have Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President is not good for the nation’s democracy and I urge the National Assembly to do the needful now that the South east has an APC senator.”

Answering a question on whether his administration willcontinue with the free education policy, Okorocha said:“I have been receiving proposals from concerned people, urging me to reintroduce school fees in our primary schools, to enable government pay salaries. I am seriously considering this option.”

FIVE NIGERIAN PLAYERS TO WATCHOUT FOR AT THE 2016 RIO OLYMPICS (MIKEL EXCLUDED)

The Dream Team VI are set to light up the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil as they begin their quest for gold at the multi-nation tournament.
The national U-23 team are pegged alongside Japan, Sweden and Colombia in Group B which many tipping Nigeria to top the group after the preliminaries.

There is no doubt that Chelsea midfield maestro Mikel Obi is the most decorated player in the present crop of players that will feature at the Games, however the nation has never lacked talents who can take-on the rest of the world.
vanuchidavid.blogspot.com takes a look at five players who will shine at the Rio Olympics:

1. Daniel Akpeyi: It was no surprise that Samson Siasia extended a call-up to the Chippa United shot stopper as his presence in the goal mouth for young lads will boost the confidence of defenders. He has two caps to his name in the senior national team.

Daniel Akpeyi
Akpeyi is no stranger to youth tournaments as he was a member of the team that featured at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Netherlands and also at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where Nigeria won silver.

2. Sadiq Umar: The 19-year-old has continued his rise to the level of being a world class player with sterling performances for his Serie B club Spezia before going on loan to Serie A side Roma.

Umar was selected by Siasia in the 35-man provisional team to the Olympics and the striker did not fail to impress as he made the final 18-man cut. All eyes will be on the striker when he plays his first international game for Nigeria.

Etebo Oghenekaro
The 20-year-old was named Most Valuable Player at the CAF tournament with five goals after which he registered his first goal for the Super Eagles against Egypt in an AFCON qualifier played at the Sani Abacha stadium in Kaduna.

4. Okechukwu Azubuike: The Yeni Malatyaspor midfielder has captained the team all through their qualifying campaign because of his leadership qualities and his influence in the midfield.

Azubuike admitted the team’s poor performance at the Suwon tournament as he took responsibility for their sloppiness after coming third in the four-nation tourney.
He said: “I am very concerned and it’s the same with the other players and we have been holding meetings on how we can improve” and this a trait of true leadership.
5. William Ekong: With six appearances for the Super Eagles, the 22-year-old was given the chance to represent Nigeria because of his composure and consistency in defence for both club and country.

Though the Gent defender is another new entry into the squad, Siasia believes his experience playing for the Dutch U-19 and U-20 national teams as well as briefs spells in England and the Eredivisie, could be a key factor when the Dream Team VI come up against tough competitors at the Games.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

by Tamara Yakovich

My youngest child turned seven months old yesterday. They grow so quickly, don't they? His development is bittersweet, I can't wait for him to reach that next stage, but then again I want him to stay little! He is at that point where he is about to crawl - but can't quite do it yet. That doesn't stop him from moving around and getting where he needs to go though! He scoots around this house as fast as he can, dragging his little body with chubby arms. I love that 'army crawl'!

His favorite adventure the past few days has been 'chasing the bouncy blue ball'. I watched this closely today, and this is what I saw. His whole face lights up as soon as he sees the ball, and 'the chase' is on! He scoots after the ball - almost gets it in his grasp - and it slips away. No matter, he squeals with delight and chases it again. He catches it the next time, rolls over on his back, and holds on tight. He uses both hands and feet to keep the ball where he wants it while he 'hugs and kisses' the ball. He is so happy to have caught it, finally!

Then he lets the ball go, he watches it roll away, perhaps wondering where it will end up, or where it will take him next. He flips himself over and takes off after it again with a big smile on his face. He could do this all day long.

Chase the ball, catch the ball, hold it and play with it joyfully for a while, then watch it roll away once more. Does he get a little frustrated when the ball rolls away for the tenth time? Maybe a little, but he knows that half the fun, maybe even MOST of the fun, is in the chase!

How many times have you 'almost' had your DREAM or your GOAL in your grasp, just to watch it slip away? Do you stop the chase? Do you sit down and give up? Or - like the small child - do you realize that the fun is in 'the chase'? Worse yet - do you 'catch' your dream or your goal and then hold on to it so tightly that you stop moving?

Lessons learned:

1. The FUN is in the chase!

2. If your dream/goal slips away - keep after it - you never know where 'the chase' might take you!

3. Once you have your dream/goal in your grasp - set a new one and start chasing again!

4. Remember - the FUN is in the chase!

Now - go out there and 'squeal with delight' as you chase after your dreams with a smile on your face! If you do it this way, no one will ever know that you don't already have your dreams in your grasp!

Meditation: for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: - Philippians 4:11

You will succeed because Jesus loves You!

THE TRUTH BEHIND THE ROMOUR: is senator George Akume Dead?

By Richard Agwa

Over the past few days, I have received several calls from friends and political associates to the fact that His Excellency, Distinguished Senator George Akume has died in India. For the records, Senator Akume has not visited India for over a long time now and has never sought medical attention in India in his entire over 60 years of existence on earth.

This story remains a fallacy and a figment of the imagination of the rumour mongering machine of the opposition. The Distinguished is hail and hearty and is not in any form, ill.
While I am not the spokesman of the Distinguished Senator, he is my leader and I owe my friends a duty to respond to their genuine concerns about this great Nigerian and son of Benue.
Life of any individual is in the hands of God and he alone, can take it. Therefore, those who would have wished the Senator dead are only wasting their time. If God wills, the Senator will live to attend the burial of some of them.
Blessed day everyone and merry Christmas in advance.

Daily Devotional: Burdens Give Us Wings

An old legend relates that long ago God had a great many burdens which He wished to have carried from one place to another on earth, so He asked the animals to lend a hand. But all of them began to make excuses for not helping: the elephant was too dignified; the lion, too proud; and so on. Finally the birds came to God and said, “If you will tie the burdens into small bundles, we’ll be glad to carry them for you. We are small but we would like to help.”

So God fastened upon the back of each one a small bundle, and they all set out walking across the plain to their destination. They sang as they went, and did not seem to feel the weight of their burdens at all. Every day the burdens seemed lighter and lighter, until the loads seems to be lifting the birds, instead of the birds carrying the burdens.
When they arrived at their destination, they discovered that when they removed their loads, there were wings in their place, wings which enabled them to fly to the sky and the tree tops. They had learned how to carry their burdens, and their loads had become wings to carry them nearer to God.

Burdens we carry for others may become wings of the spirit, to lift us into happiness such as we have never known.

Meditation: Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. – Galatians 6:2

You will succeed in Jesus Name!
